- The full story offers valuable lessons for organizations balancing modernization, cybersecurity improvements and limited IT resources.
Organizations planning major IT modernization projects often focus on where they want to go next: cloud migration, new digital services, improved customer experiences, and stronger cybersecurity. But before those initiatives can succeed, they need a solid foundation.
That was the situation facing Nambawan Super, the corporate trustee of Papua New Guinea's largest superannuation fund. As the organization prepared for growth and modernization, its IT team recognized that existing security and infrastructure arrangements were creating unnecessary friction. Email delays were affecting responsiveness, releasing legitimate quarantined messages was cumbersome and there was limited visibility into critical security systems managed by an external provider.
To address those challenges, Nambawan Super worked with managed service provider VirtualFlex to implement Barracuda Email Protection and Barracuda WAF-as-a-Service. The result was not simply a security refresh. The project became part of a broader effort to modernize infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and prepare the organization for future cloud and digital transformation initiatives.

Moving beyond the “black box”
Unlike many of our customer case studies, this one is not centered on stopping a major cyberattack or responding to a security incident. Instead, it highlights a challenge that many IT teams face every day: inadequate visibility and control.
In the case study, Nambawan Super CTO Praveen Gupta describes the organization’s previous email security environment as something of a “black box.” Resolving issues often required submitting tickets and waiting for responses from a third party, making it difficult to quickly address problems or support users.
For organizations operating with lean IT resources, that kind of arrangement can create a significant burden. Time spent chasing answers is time that cannot be spent on modernization projects, user support or strategic initiatives.
The full case study explores how Nambawan Super and VirtualFlex approached those challenges and how improved visibility helped create a more responsive and manageable environment.
Security that supports growth
Nambawan Super’s plans extended beyond email security. The organization was also preparing for future application development, cloud-based infrastructure and expanded online services for its members. As those plans progressed, security needed to scale alongside them.
Rather than treating cybersecurity as a separate initiative, the project became part of a larger roadmap focused on growth, modernization and improved service delivery. Nambawan Super’s story delivers critical insights into how security decisions made today can support business and technology goals that may still be several years away.
A partnership approach
The story also highlights the role that trusted technology partners can play in helping organizations navigate change.
VirtualFlex has worked with Barracuda since 2016 and brought its experience deploying and managing Barracuda solutions across customer environments in Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Fiji. That experience helped Nambawan Super address immediate operational challenges while establishing a framework for future expansion.
If your organization is evaluating modernization plans, the case study provides a practical example of how technology vendors, managed service providers and internal IT teams can work together to reduce complexity while improving security.
