Online archive mailboxes in Office 365 are essentially unlimited and free – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for third-party archiving, even though it comes at a cost.
First of all, just getting all that legacy mail up to the cloud can be a challenge. And then, using built-in archiving has limitations: preservation is generally on a per-mailbox basis and essentially “mixes” preserved emails with operational email data. It can be confusing when it’s time to retrieve archived information, something that third parties do very well versus what’s built into Office 365.
As a government municipality, the City of Lebanon, TN is required to store emails for up to 7 years. The Barracuda Message Archiver allows them to automate the archiving process, removes strain from their email servers, and gives them the ability to easily retrieve stored messages.
