Email security is a slippery slope: too little and you’re exposed, too much and your Office 365 might slow to a crawl.
Built-in Exchange Online Protection focuses on connection management. This is fast and catches most spam, but doesn’t do anything with phishing attempts. Advanced Threat Protection does provide content inspection, but it also “sandboxes” most questionable content. This means that the content won’t be delivered until a thorough inspection has been performed, including “detonating” the URL attempt. This can take a half-hour. So how much security you acquire – along with how it operates – can have a significant impact on how fast your environment runs.
Using Microsoft’s built-in and optional products can be a balancing act – something that third party providers have overcome.
