As anyone who’s been keeping track of the tech media in the UK may have noticed, Bloxx recently was acquired by Akamai.
Let’s examine what has happened:
Bloxx was established in 1999, offering customers email and web filtering solutions. The company had some interesting technology, with a heavy focus on the educational space within the UK market. Based in Edinburgh, Bloxx had 55 staff and by all accounts, did a pretty good job with the tools at their disposal. Akamai plans to change some things:
Jeff Young, Akamai’s communications VP, did not tell The Register whether Bloxx was set for an employee restructuring, but did announce that things were indeed set to change for Bloxx, as the company’s plans did “not include continuing to offer an appliance.”
“We will fully support their existing appliance product until the completion of all Bloxx customer contracts,” Young commented. “During this time, we’ll also help support customer migration to alternative partner solutions or to Akamai’s platform, where appropriate.”
This came as a shock to Bloxx partners and customers, who now need to build relationships with new solution providers. Although many vendors are competing for the customers orphaned by Bloxx and Akamai, they may not be able to offer an equitable solution at the same price. Some Bloxx partners already know how they’re going to take care of their customers:
… Henry Doyle, director of Bloxx partner Altinet, was not overly concerned by the developments.
