Scanned documents are not always what they seem

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

If you aren't expecting that scanned document, think twice before opening. Emails pretending to be scanned documents continue to make their way to unsuspecting victims. We've seen almost 100,000 of these emails in just two days, and we expect that number to grow.

The “HP Printer Scanned Documents” has an attachment with a zip file containing an executable. Once, opened, the executable will enable a trojan horse application for an attacker to do just about anything. Logging key strokes, taking screen shots, and retrieving saved passwords, are just a few of the things possible once this Trojan horse is active on a machine.

Spammers seem to have identified a technique/email type that potential victims are not expecting.

Barracuda Networks customers using the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall are protected from these emails.
