Improve Cost and Operational Efficiencies with Virtual Appliances

I just returned from a weeklong business trip to the South where I had the chance to meet some of our great partners in the region. In addition to showcasing Barracuda Networks solutions and enjoying some good BBQ, I gained invaluable feedback that will enable us to serve our customers better.

Amongst the many interesting discussions, it was hard to ignore the impact of the economic recession across the business landscape. IT departments have a unique challenge in this environment. On the one hand, you have to stay ahead of the technology curve while on the other hand, you have to reduce costs and improve operational efficiencies.

Many IT departments are looking to virtualization as a means to address some of these challenges going forward. While formerly the domain of large enterprises, small and medium businesses today are achieving significant benefits by adopting virtualization as part of longer term IT strategies. In recent surveys among SMB customers, 50-70 percent of respondents have either implemented virtualization initiatives or are looking to do so within the year.

Simply put, virtualization allows IT departments to do more with less. By standardizing on budget-conscious hardware platforms and sharing physical computing resources across multiple virtualized applications (or virtual machines), organizations can save money by improving resource utilization and reducing power and space requirements in the data center. Also, highly sophisticated management and backup tools available as part of modern virtualization infrastructures reduce the time spent on IT administration, simplify disaster recovery, improve business continuity and allow for rapid scalability and deployment.

For organizations adopting virtualization as part of their IT strategy, Barracuda Networks provides a range of virtual appliances based on leading-edge security and application delivery technologies.  Barracuda Networks virtual appliances are supported on a variety of virtualization platforms including VMware ESX/ESXi, CITRIX XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V.
